First Church of Vila do Conde #7

For the first time in this blog, you can see two Chimeras (figures identic to Gargoyles, but without the "function" of water expelling .....).
At the center a Gargoyle.

Once again, the cold grey of granite is disguised by the light of the summer.

Leça do Balio Monastery #8

The grey of granite is evident on this Gargoyle. Very different from the ones from Batalha. This ones allow less detailed work, but on the other hand, this hard stone gives the Gargoyle a longer life.

Leça do Balio Monastery #6

You can't imagine how good was the weather when this photo was taken. Today the sky is grey and sad. Maybe a new Gargoyle can send this bad mood away....

Leça do Balio Monastery #5

Again a solo Gargoyle. Under this Gargoyle, mora than 600 years passed by. Many bad spirits ....

Leça do Balio Monastery #4

These two gargoyles do team work. The bad spirits caught by the first ones, are then “expelled” by the second one below. This effort goes on for the last 7000 years.

Another gargoyle that likes to be hiding. In this monastery there are several like this. It’s strange. Normally the gargoyle is something to be shown.

Sometimes, even the Gargoyles need to be hiding. Maybe to take the bad spirits by surprise.

Leça do Balio Monastery #1

As promised, today, the start of a new series of photos from “old” Gargoyles. This monument, Leça do Balio Monastery isn’t very much known, even in Portugal. Nevertheless, it’s on of the oldest in northern Portugal, over 1000 years (the Gargoyles came later – Gothic period). Even before, at the same place, there was a roman temple, dedicated to Jupiter – 1st century!

Pestana's Chapel #5

Today, the last photo of this Chapel. The end of a series of photos from "modern" Gargoyles, antecipating the return to the ancient ones.
When two Gargoyles are not enough, it is always possible to use three....

If you want to know more about this Chapel in Porto (also know as Chapel of The Holy Heart of Jesus) go here.

Like humans, the Gargoyles don’t like to be alone. Who does? Even in our worse moments, there’s always the right person to listen to us.

Pestana's Chapel #3

At Pestana’s Chapel, old ideas are made new again. The old Gargoyle goes with the new (neo) Gothic style, to bring back the flamboyant image of the building.

Pestana's Chapel #2

Yesterday night, I had a problem accessing Blogger to make the new post. Maybe I need to put a Gargoyle at my house to keep away bad informatics spirits … who knows.

As I said yesterday, new Gargoyles are to be shown now. These ones were “born”, almost half millennium after the ones from Monastery of Batalha. Sometimes people have the idea that Gargoyles are always very old, typically from Gothic period. But we have to remember that architecture works like art, in circles. These Gargoyles are from a neo-gothic Chapel in Porto, from the end of 19th century. Private Chapel of a Palace from the Pestana’s family also called: Chapel of The Holy Heart of Jesus.

Today I present you the last Gargoyle from Monastery of Batalha, at least for the moment. Tomorrow there will be a Gargoyle from another monument. Until then, the Gargoyle “screams” Good Bye!

At the same place (museum) it's possible to find old friends (like the one posted in Monastery of Batalha #2). It's good to know that someone is taking care of the statues, in order to keep them visible to everybody.
